FOOD FOR THOUGHT

VEGETARIANISM IS NOT A CURE FOR COVID-19

There are many who claim that a universal switch to a plant-based diet is the antidote to the COVID-19 virus. While eating a vegetarian or vegan diet has health benefits, there isn't any scientific evidence that it will cure the virus.

Still, we don't want to discourage anyone from stepping over to our team. Meat free meals are a good way to reduce your chances of obesity, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

Why?

People who follow a vegetarian diet tend to eat fresh, plant-based foods that contain antioxidants and and fiber. Vegetarians tend to focus on their health in other ways as well (exercise and other habits).

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been an upsurge in the number of people trying to eat healthier.  According to Hortidaily, an online magazine for horticultural and agricultural interests, the demand for organic and sustainable food has increased during this pandemic.

They report that Whole Foods Market, has had to limit the number of its online customers because of unprecedented demand. Health food stores have remained open worldwide as essential businesses and most report an increase in sales since the pandemic shut down many other businesses. In the UK, sales at organic retailers have grown by 30 percent and retailers in France said sales are up as much as 40%, Hortidaily reported.

So, everyone is eating healthier. Is it because eating at home has caused some people to rethink their food choices. Some might argue that after the initial round of hoarded junk food ran out, people are making better choices after looking in the mirror.

Is it a lifestyle change or are people turning to vegetarianism during quarantine they way they sometimes do during Lent? They'll try it for 40 days and then celebrate their success with a giant cheeseburger at the end.

Eat healthier...eat vegetarian...but can't wait for this to be over.

Perhaps the change in diet will have the effect of making factory farmers rethink the way they produce meat. While demand is down, will they redo the practices that are so dangerous to the animals and the people who consume them? Unlikely. But, maybe, there can be a discussion.

Please don't look to vegetarianism or veganism to cure this, or any other, viral infection. It may help you build a stronger, healthier body that might make you more prepared to battle an infection, but it is not a miracle cure.

Please join us in plant-based eating if you want to feel better, be better prepared to fight off infection, be overall more healthy. But, please, don't think it will make you invincible to the virus or that it will cure you if you get it.
