Pop this snack into your mouth

Want a simple snack that’s sure to please even the pickiest eater?
We call them Poppers around out house. They’re kind of a cross between a danish and Fried Wontons and they are absolutely delicious.
Wontons are nothing more than very thin squares of pasta. The name comes from the Cantonese words wan tan which means “swallowing clouds”. And they are so thin and light that it is almost like swallowing a cloud.
Traditionally, the wontons are filled with meat (usually pork) or thinly sliced vegetables, but we like to use fresh fruit and cream cheese for the sweet filling. We have, from time to time, put jalapeno peppers in them to make an inexpensive version of the poppers you get as an appetizer at many restaurants…not exactly the same thing, but a whole lot cheaper.
While wontons are usually just folded like a tiny bag to hold the filling inside, I prefer to fold them up like small envelopes with a special treat inside.
To form the envelope, you simply plop whatever filling you want in the middle of the square and turn it so it looks like a diamond shape. Fold up the bottom, left and right corners. Roll the bottom toward the top, moisten the corner and seal. That’s it.

Fruit Poppers

1 package of wonton wrappers
2 ounces of cream cheese, more or less
Assorted fresh fruit, cut into ¼ inch pieces
Vegetable oil for frying
Sugar for dusting

· For each Popper, put a half teaspoon or so of cream cheese on the wonton, put 2 or 3 pieces of fruit on top. Fold the wonton up envelope style.
· Heat up the oil – about an inch deep in the pot of your choice – to about 375 degrees.
· Drop the Poppers in 5 or 6 at a time and fry until they are golden brown. Pull them out with a slotted spoon and drain in a colander lined with cheesecloth.
· Put a tablespoon of sugar (for each batch) in a paper lunch bag or a plastic container with a cover, put the wontons in and shake until the Poppers have a light dusting of sweetness.
· Set them on a wire rack to cool.
· Repeat the frying, draining and sugaring steps until all the wontons are done.
· If there are any Poppers left uneaten by the time you are done with the whole set, store them in an airtight container.
