If you want to over-indulge this New Year's Eve, try this treat

I was trying to find something festive to make for a New Year's Eve event. I wanted something sparkly to go with the festive evening that wasn't too heavy.
When I was a kid, my grandmother sometimes used to put slices of flan into a wine glass on New Year's Eve so that I would have something with which to toast in the new year. At 6 or 7 years old, flan was a lot more appealing than the champale the adults were drinking (hey, we couldn't afford real champagne)...it tickled my nose and smelled funny. The flan was sweet and smooth. It tasted like the best candy you could find, but it was cold and had a crunchy caramel side to it that I loved.
I think that now, I'd probably still pick the flan over the champagne...definately over the champale.
Celebrate the new year tomorrow with a sweet flan. You might get a little heavier if you over-indulge in this treat, but you sure won't get a DUI.
Flan
4 eggs, beaten
1 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup of milk
1/2 cup of orange juice or water
1 teaspoon of  vanilla
8 tablespoons of sugar

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees and mix all ingredients except the sugar in a large bowl.

  • In a heavy sauce pan over medium heat, add the sugar. Stir constantly until sugar dissolves and becomes clear. Continue cooking and stirring until sugar turns a light golden brown. Immediately pour sugar mixture into small oven-proof bowls that have been sprayed with oil, dividing mixture evenly. Tilt baking dishes immediately, coating the bottom of the dishes with the liquified sugar.

  • Divide the egg mixture evenly among the bowls.Place them in a pan and place them in a large pan filled with water and bake for about an hour.

  • Remove bowls from water and allow them to cool. Refrigerate until custard is well chilled.

  • Turn them over to remove from the bowls. The caramel sauce will be on top.

Vegetarian.
