He thought they were serving him soap

When my grandfather first met my grandmother's family, they served - among the many courses - avocados, which he had never tasted in his life. He took the first bite and looked around and saw a gaggle of my grandmother's younger siblings giggling.
They were laughing because they knew my grandmother was really taken with this man, but after tasting what he thought had the flavor of soap, he assumed they had played a trick on him. No trick...just a fuiit he had never imagined before. Even after they told him there was no joke, he didn't quite believe him, but they all loved him.
Over time, he came to love avocados and would make them in all kinds of ways - from just plain with a sprinkle of salt, staight from the skin to guacamole to sandwich fillings.
As soon as Genevieve was able to eat solid food (I made all her baby food), she was eating avocados. There was never an "I'm eating soap" face, she just gobbled it up. As she got older, she began to like spicer foods and guacamole became a favotite. Lucky for me, as it is one of my favorites too.
Guacamole was made by the Aztecs as early as the 1500s. After the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, guacamole became popular in Spain.
These days, it is popular in almost any country with all kinds of people. There are probably as many variations as there are people who slice open the avocados.
Start with this recipe and add spiciness and other ingredients as you find what works best for you.
Guacamole
2 ripe avocados

1/2 red onion, minced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
2 tablespoons of cilantro leaves, finely chopped
1 tablespoon of fresh lime or lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon of Kosher salt
Dash of black pepper
1/2 ripe tomato, chopped
  • Cut avocados in half. Remove the pit and scoop out the flesh. Put it into a mixing bowl.
  • Using a fork, mash the avocado. Add the chopped onion, cilantro, juice, salt and pepper and mash some more. Add the jalapeno a little at a time until it is as spicy as you want it.
  • Refrigerate until you are ready to serve.
  • Just before serving, add the chopped tomato to the guacamole and mix.

 Vegan.
