Fancy look, sweet taste and little impact on the wallet

My kids always took the meals that I cooked for them for granted. I don't think they were unusual. What kid gushes about Mom's cooking while they still live at home.
One of the few things they did go ga-ga over was French Toast. I don't make plain old egg dunked white bread with a little sugar mixed in so it is a little better than most of the stuff you get at the diner or at the fast food place.
It's hard to make bad French Toast, though it's a little harder to make a great version of this breakfast classic.
The right kind of bread is essential. I like to use a thick slice of dense sweet bread. If you live in a place where you can get Portugese sweet bread, that's the best. The Hawaiian sweet bread that's available at a lot of groceries is good too. And, of course, you can always make your own, which is what I do.
Add a little punch to the mixture with cinnamon and nutmeg and you've got the secret to this breakfast dessert.
If you're making breakfast in bed for your sweetheart on Valentines Day, this is a great dish. It's a classic and your sweetie will wake up to delicious smells from the kitchen.
Add a dusting of powdered sugar (sifted through a small-screened strainer) to the toast before the syrup is drizzled over the top and you'll have the look of a professionally-prepared dish.

  • Brown the dipped bread on both sides.
