Spice up your dessert

When my mother got married in the 1950s, she - of course - was given all sorts of kitchen stuff, including an impressive collection of cookbooks.
Unfortunately, for those who had carefully chosen pleasant books my mother had no interest in cooking...none...
So, the books were packed away in boxes for more than three decades until I developed an obsession for cooking. For the most part, 1950s recipes are full of fat, meat and things that I try to keep out of my diet, but when I go after a dessert, I'm not counting calories or looking at the fat content. Desserts are treats...you give them to yourself on rare occasions so don't eat them with a stressless mind.
Steve was looking for a not-so-sweet desset the other night.
I wanted a cake.
In one of those old cookbooks, I found a recipe for a spice cale that met both our desires.
Old fashioned Spice Cake is sweet, but tempered with a few spices. It's soft and moist and has a great old feel to it that makes it a great comfort food.
If you want something sweet to go with your spice cake, try adding some whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Old Fashioned Spice Cake
1 cup sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup sour milk
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray oil on a baking pan.
  • Sift the sugar, the flour, the soda, the salt, the cinnamon and the cloves. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk and the oil. Mix until it's all combined.
  • Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 45 minutes.
Vegetarian.
