Save money with edible table decorations

I know it is the day after Independence Day, but I had to share this really simple recipe that the activities director at the assisted living community where my mother lives made for and with the residents.
It can be adapted to any holiday with sprinkle of whatever color is appropriate...pastels for Easter, orange and black for Halloween, green and red for Christmas...
I always look for snacks that can double as table decorations. I make fruit baskets that look like flowers or a watermelon basket wth a variety of fruits piled inside. And, of course, cakes decorated in some fancy fashion with designs or even with real flowers or fruit.
It saves money when you don't have to have flowers and food to make your table beautiful.
These pretty pretzel treats are easy to put together. Put them in a big glass bowl or tie them up with a pretty bow and put one at each place setting.
You can make your own frosting (I'll have a simple recipe here) or use the canned stuff.
And, then, 1-2-3 you have your treat.
Pretty Pretzel Treats
1 bag of thick stick pretzels
2 cups of heavy vanilla frosting (see below for  basic recipe or buy a can from the store)
Sugar sprinkles, in the appropriate colors for your event
  • Put the frosting into a deep dish or glass.
  • Swirl the pretzel into the frosting, pull it out and turn to make sure it's completely coated almost half way down.
  • Sprinkle with the sugary bits and set them on a sheet of waxed paper until the frosting has set a bit.
  • Enjoy.

Frosting (if you choose to make your own)
1/3 cup of softened butter
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 poundof sifted confectioners sugar
3 to 4 tablespoons of milk
  • Cream the butter, salt, and vanilla, beating the mixture until its light and fluffy.
  • Add the sugar a half cup or so at  time into the mixture, beating after each addition.
  • Add 3 tablespoons pf milk, beating hte mix until it's smooth.
  • Beat in more milk until it looks like it will be the right consistency for dipping and covering the pretzel.

Vegetarian.
