Fancy on the cheap

I wanted something fancy to put out on the snacking table for Christmas morning while we talked and opened our Christmas presents. The presents were meager this year, just a few and mostly homemade. The kids were all home (two with boyfriends) for the celebration so it was good.
A fancy centerpiece item would make the presentation a little more festive.
Baked Brie always gives the impression of glitz to a party table, I always thought. The puff pastry is a little pricy, though, so I tend to shy away from it unless there are no other options.
The generic crescent rolls are more in my price range so I snapped up a roll and gave it a whirl. Soft bread, cheese and fruit can never be bad, I reasoned.
And I was not disappointed.
The resulting snack was so popular with the girls that they barely noticed the dearth of boxes under the tree.
This is a budget-friendly treat that looks like a million and tastes as good as it looks.
Budget Baked Brie
1 tube of refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
1 wedge of Brie cheese (leave the rind on it)
Cherry jam (or the sweet jam of your choice)
Brown sugar
1/4 cup of maple syrup
  • Preheat the oven to 350Āŗ.
  • On a cookie sheet, sprayed with oil, lay out the crescent rolls flat; plop the Brie on top.
  • Spread the jam on the brie, fold the dough over top, cutting off the excess dough.
  • Drizzle the top with the maple syrup and sprinkle the brown sugar on top of your crust. (Decorate the top with any leftover dough.)
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes.
  • Serve with crackers, bread or apple slices.
