At My Table is a good place to start a meatless celebration

Sterling Publishing Co.  2015

Mary McCartney, the daughter of two pretty famous vegetarians (you may have heard of Paul and Linda), has written a couple of vegetarian cookbooks. I received one, At My Table: Vegetarian Feasts for Family and Friends, as a gift recently.

McCartney's book is beautifully illustrated with her photos (she, like her mother, is best known as a photographer) that accompany recipes that are designed for celebrations. They are the sorts of meals that are destined to become traditions.

McCartney is a co-founder and official ambassador of Meat Free Monday, a not-for-profit which is dedicated to raising awareness of the environmental impacts of animal agriculture and industrial fishing. They try to encourage people to eat plant based meals at least once a week in order to slow the effects of a meatcentric diet.

That's where her book comes in. If you are looking for delicious vegetarian or vegan meals to kickstart a change in lifestyle, this is a great starting point. If you have progressed from Meat Free Mondays to vegetarian every day, this book is also for you.

I really enjoyed the recipes, divided into a variety of party plans, such as a Celebration Brunch, a Middle Eastern Feast or an Afternoon Tea Party. From Lentils and Rice with Caramelized Onions to Carrot and Apple Madeleines to Super Mac N Cheese, the recipes are simple, but delicious. Her Warm Mushroom Salad is one of my favorites.

Because her goal is to get everyone to try a vegetarian diet, the recipes are familiar but plant based. These recipes aren't going to scare off anyone who isn't already eating a vegetarian diet.

Plan a party to help your friends and family find some vegetarian meals they like.
