Book Review: Vegan with a Vengeance

My daughter and son-in-law gave me a copy of Vegan With a Vengeance for Christmas a few years ago. I'm vegetarian, not vegan, but what the heck. It looked interesting

As you can tell from the well-worn cover of my copy of the book, it's one of my go-to books.

You do not need to be a vegan to enjoy the recipes in this book, Even the picky carnivore hubby likes a few of the offerings.

The author, Isa Chandra Moskowitz, is a creative cook. She's not constrained in the ingredients and makes exciting dishes that will please anyone who appreciates plant based dishes.

There is nothing run-of-the-mill about the recipes in here, though some may seem familiar.

Not just blueberry waffles. Lemon-Corn Waffles with Blueberry-Maple Sauce (page 33). Not just fried rice. Give Brussels Sprout Fried Rice (page 114) a try.

She is a little heavy on recipes that include tofu and seitan, which we all know is not my favorite. In most of those cases, the offending ingredient can be left out or a meaty mushroom can be used instead.

The desserts (sometimes a bit of a disappointment in a vegan setting) are surprisingly moist and delicious. Never would I have imagined that the Raspberry Blackout Cake with Ganache (page 232) could be moist and tasty. First of all...vegan ganache??? Yes. It's delicious.

If you're vegetarian and thinking about moving down the path toward veganism, this book is for you. If you want to cook a meal for a vegan friend from time to time, this book is for you. If you just want to have an occasional vegan meal, this book is for you. If you're a vegan, this book is absolutely for you.
